SUMMARY
New Special Eurobarometer – Food innovation: building public trust and outreach
Great to see another Special Eurobarometer 👏 this time on ‘Food innovation: building public trust and outreach’.
Animal Welfare is referred to several times e.g. it ranked as the 2nd potential benefit to the willingness to regularly consume innovative foods: “Benefits related to animal welfare, environmental impact and nutrition also resonate with sizeable proportions of respondents, while food security and food waste reduction are mentioned somewhat less often.” (page 57). The socio-demographic analysis also refers to animal welfare.
“For the purposes of the survey innovative foods refer to foods or food ingredients developed using advanced technologies that may offer additional options alongside existing food systems and European culinary traditions. These include, for example, ingredients produced through fermentation using micro-organisms, foods developed from crops adapted to better withstand droughts, pests or extreme weather, plant-based protein ingredients obtained using new methodologies, products derived from animal parts or cells, and other novel approaches to food production.”
