The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has announced its second seminar, titled “The role of livestock in agrifood systems and beyond,” as part of a broader global assessment examining the contribution of livestock to food security, sustainable agrifood systems, nutrition, and healthy diets.
The webinar series organised by the FAO aims to introduce three major publications ahead of their official release, providing an opportunity to set the scene for wider discussion. Each webinar explores how science- and evidence-based assessments can inform programmatic and policy processes, while also highlighting the distinct roles and responsibilities of the various stakeholders in the livestock sector.
The second webinar is scheduled to take place on 4 May 2026 and will feature a panel discussion with civil society representatives. The session aims to bring together a range of perspectives and showcase examples of good practices from across the sector. The overarching assessment is a comprehensive, science- and evidence-based undertaking, consisting of three component documents.
The first focuses on the contribution of terrestrial animal source food to healthy diets for improved nutrition and health outcomes. An evidence and policy overview examining the state of knowledge and existing gaps for this component has already been published.
The remaining two documents are expected to be released later this year. The second document will address the drivers of the supply and demand of terrestrial animal-source foods, following the completion of a corresponding evidence and policy overview. The third and final document will assess the contribution of the livestock sector to food security and sustainable agrifood systems, paying particular attention to the sector’s benefits, constraints, synergies and trade-offs.
