The European Commission has published the Special Eurobarometer 577: Europeans, agriculture and the CAP. Approx. 1000 citizens in each EU Member State were interviewed between May and June 2026, providing  an indication of current public perceptions. Animal welfare is referred to in several contexts through out the report. Examples include:

• widespread agreement that imports should only enter the EU if they comply with EU standards including those on animal welfare
• higher animal welfare standards are an important factor when deciding on which food products to buy
• organic agriculture is considered to respect higher standards of animal welfare than non-organic production
• food production in the EU is considered to be more expensive due to higher standards including for animal welfare
