The EFSA released a technical report in November 2023 outlining the proposed use of animal-based measures for anti- and post-mortem welfare assessments for beef cattle. This project aims to evaluate animal-based measures (e.g., internal lesions, external cleanliness, and others) at slaughter to inspect the on-farm welfare conditions for the beef cattle. This publication reviews animal-based measures currently recorded for beef cattle at slaughterhouses in 14 of 27 EU Member States and 5 IPA countries. Participants were also asked to rank feasibility and prioritisation of multiple animal-based measures for future use. This project is part of the Farm to Fork initiative and delivery of a scientific report is expected in 2025. A similar programme has already been mandated for other species (i.e., pigs and calves).
