EURCAW Ruminants & Equines has published its response to a query concerning space requirements for housing a mare and foal. A survey was sent to national contact points in the EU to help answer the request.

Replies from 19 EU Member States were received. Equines are protected by the general requirements in Directive 98/58. In Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Luxembourg, Slovenia and Sweden, specific national legislation exists that states space requirements for horses. Five respondent Member States have no specific legislation or recommendations on horses, but other Member States or their horse sector provide non-binding recommendations (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Lithuania and the Netherlands).
