Equid: member of the genus Equidae, understood to mean horses (Equus ferus caballus), donkeys (Equus asinus, originated from the African wild ass Equus africanus) and their hybrids (i.e. mules and hinnies). A mule is the result of breeding between a male donkey and a female horse/pony; a hinny is the result of the breeding of a male horse/pony and a female donkey.
