The 3Rs, reduce, refine and replace, were originally developed for animal research ethics. This article, “Considering the 3Rs for castration and tail docking in sheep”, outlines the potential application of each R on castration and tail docking in sheep. The authors define the 3Rs as: “reduce – reducing the number of animals exposed to the procedure”; “refine – modifying the procedure to reduce the pain associated with the process”; and “replace – eliminating the need for the procedure all together.”
Suggestions for reduction include keeping single-born or early lambing season lambs entire. For tail-docking, reduction could be improved by applying other controls for myiasis, such as management of parasitic gastroenteritis or strategic timing of shearing. Refinement for castration and tail docking involves comprehensive anaesthetic procedures. Replacement strategies for castration include increased management with multiple groups to separate ram lambs. Tail docking replacement strategies include genetic selection of shorter tail length.
